Tempered anomalous diffusion in heterogeneous systems

چکیده
[1] Passive tracers in heterogeneous media experience preasymptotic transport with scale-dependent anomalous diffusion, before eventually converging to the asymptotic diffusion limit. We propose a novel tempered model to capture the slow convergence of sub-diffusion to a diffusion limit for passive tracers in heterogeneous media. Previous research used power-law waiting times to capture the timenonlocal transport process. Here those waiting times are exponentially tempered, to capture the natural cutoff of retention times. The model is validated against particle concentrations from detailed numerical simulations and field measurements, at various scales and geological environments. Citation: Meerschaert, M. M., Y. Diffusion and relaxation controlled by tempered -stable processes
We derive general properties of anomalous diffusion and nonexponential relaxation from the theory of tempered -stable processes. The tempering results in the existence of all moments of operational time. The subordination by the inverse tempered -stable process provides diffusion relaxation that occupies an intermediate place between subdiffusion Cole-Cole law and normal diffusion exponential l...
متن کاملFractional Fokker-Planck equation with tempered α-stable waiting times: langevin picture and computer simulation.
In this paper we introduce a Langevin-type model of subdiffusion with tempered α-stable waiting times. We consider the case of space-dependent external force fields. The model displays subdiffusive behavior for small times and it converges to standard Gaussian diffusion for large time scales. We derive general properties of tempered anomalous diffusion from the theory of tempered α-stable proce...
متن کاملTransient Anomalous Sub-diffusion on Bounded Domains.
This paper develops strong solutions and stochastic solutions for the tempered fractional diffusion equation on bounded domains. First the eigenvalue problem for tempered fractional derivatives is solved. Then a separation of variables and eigenfunction expansions in time and space are used to write strong solutions. Finally, stochastic solutions are written in terms of an inverse subordinator.
متن کاملFractional Calculus, Anomalous Diffusion, and Probability
Ideas from probability can be very useful to understand and motivate fractional calculus models for anomalous diffusion. Fractional derivatives in space are related to long particle jumps. Fractional time derivatives code particle sticking and trapping. This probabilistic point of view also leads to some interesting extensions, including vector fractional derivatives, and tempered fractional de...
متن کاملModeling mixed retention and early arrivals in multidimensional heterogeneous media using an explicit Lagrangian scheme
This study develops an explicit two-step Lagrangian scheme based on the renewal-reward process to capture transient anomalous diffusion with mixed retention and early arrivals in multidimensional media. The resulting 3-D anomalous transport simulator provides a flexible platform for modeling transport. The first step explicitly models retention due to mass exchange between one mobile zone and a...
